2020 Shelter Goals as documented in the Brookhaven Adopted Budget
- Renovate the front lobby for ADA compliance and upgrade bathrooms available to the public
Note: Shelter “Goals” need to go beyond building improvements.
2020 Shelter Goals recommended by community animal advocates :
TNR, S/N Program.
- Communicate/collaborate with TNR volunteers
- Cost analysis of private vets vs. hire/contract in-house
Note: In-house may be more cost effective if combined with vet care services - Increase participating vets or hire in-house
- Purchase equipment
- Offer recovery/temporary housing
- Document/publish/promote new program to increase community participation
- Document/publish statistics for transparency
- Analysis of monthly trends, locations, how to improve
- Mandatory S/N for owner redemptions
- Reduce demand/need for S/N over time
Vet Care
- Cost analysis of private vets for non-emergency care vs. hire/contract in-house
Note: In-house may be more cost effective if vet care includes S/N services.
Emergency Vet Care
- Implement emergency care agreement
Note: Authorization to enter into a new agreement with Selden was approved by the board in Oct, but has not been enacted - Document policy/procedure for stray/injured/sick dogs/cats after hours
- Establish holding space for stray dogs to reduce costs and problems with pet redemption at Selden Emergency after hours
Euthanasia
- Document/publish policies/procedures (evaluation, owner surrender, life-saving options)
- Maintain/publish statistics for transparency
- Reduce numbers
Shelter Statistics
- Register with Shelter Animals Count
- Document/publish statistics for all shelter animals (Asilomar)
- Calculate #days in shelter for all animals to identify durations and shelter average
- Analysis of monthly trends, locations, how to improve
- Reduce intake, increase live release, reduce homeless pet population
- According to Brookhaven 2016 Accomplishments, computer software was installed. Is data being entered? What reports are available? Transparency needed!
